Cupolas for Sale

Cupolas are a bridge between practical architecture and outdoor décor. At one point, cupolas were installed into many coastal homes as lookout points. In the present, as whaling is no longer an industry and fishing is relegated to certain areas, cupolas have evolved from this practical use into one that is decorative only. These structures are added for their symbolism, as the peak is considered an image of ascent, and both homes and public buildings have them added.

Several types of cupolas are for sale at HG Lifestyle, but the two basic types for homes are wooden and vinyl. Each is designed with four sides, vents or windows added, and a copper roof. If you're looking to install a cupola and not have to maintain it often, a vinyl model will fit your needs better. The surface of a vinyl cupola is cleaned easily and can be painted. Wooden cupolas for sale, on the other hand, have the appearance of a traditional fixture, although more maintenance will be needed.

Cupolas date back to the 18th century in the United States, although European buildings erected prior to this time include them. In fact, castles and churches were designed with cupolas for practical purposes. In the United States, they were common in many coastal towns with a whaling or fishing industry, such as New London, Connecticut, or New Bedford, Massachusetts. Cupolas, at the time, were built large enough to fit people inside and had at least one window. Families would walk into them to see if their husbands or brothers had returned from fishing or whaling, and, because of this, the structure was dubbed the "widow's walk."

Cupolas actually spread inland over time, and their practical purpose evolved. Instead of a lookout point, they were used as vents on top of many homes for air circulation. Several inland East Coast homes with cupolas often have this vent design, and, in the present, green home designs incorporate cupolas in this capacity.

With several cupolas for sale at HG Lifestyle, do you know how to install one? In general, one goes on top of a peaked roof and needs to be cut at the roof's angle. This needs to be measured before the cupola is added, and the angle must be cut out of the body before the cupola is mounted.
